Brexit Britain – Berlin photographer Sandra Ratkovic delves into a world of weird absurdity

by | Art

Sandra Ratkovic, born in Croatia but grew up in Germany and a wahlberliner for many years, established her photographic credentials with her photo book Moscow – a weird and utterly idiosyncratic look through the lens at post-cold-war, early-21st Century Russia, with its absurdities, strange beauty, Putin obsession and love of big, brightly-painted rockets.

Moscow made her reputation, being lauded internationally and shown around Germany and beyond.

For her next photo book, Sandra Ratkovic has turned her gaze on Brexit Britain. Again with an unerring instinct for the particular weirdness that makes up the real national character of a place, she visited the Merseyside region – Liverpool, Wigan, New Brighton, Southport and St. Helens – and snapped people from all classes and conformities. The twist is that you only get to find out at the back of the book which of the people photographed voted for Brexit and which against: thus cleverly turning the tables on the viewer of the photographs and making the photographs simultaneously questions that we ask ourselves, as well as statements in their own right.

The Brexit exhibition is on for one day in Berlin on the 31st August at the Mainoeuvre Gallery, put on by Collectors Club: Meraner Strasse 10, 10825 Berlin.
