UK jazz trio, GoGo Penguin, return to Berlin on 22nd October with a fascinating project to share: ‘Koyaanisqatsi Live’.
GoGo Penguin released their fourth album, A Humdrum Star, in 2018. The reception the album received confirmed – in case there was still any doubt – that they now sit at the pinnacle of the contemporary jazz-electronica scene.
Unlike many leftfield groups nominated for the UK’s Mercury Prize (which they were in 2014 for second album v2.0), GoGo Penguin have retained their place in the public imagination.
The Manchester-based group, made up of Chris Illingworth on piano, Nick Blacka on bass and Rob Turner on drums, have now embarked on an intriguing new journey into the world of film.
The project sees the band play an orginal live score to a screening of the cult 1982 film, Koyaanisqatsi. With no dialogue or narration, the experimental film consists largely of shots of American cities and landscapes. The original soundtrack to the film, directed by Godfrey Reggio, was Philip Glass’s first full composition for cinema.
The past year has seen such postive audience responses that GoGo Penguin will release a five-track EP inspired by the experience, Ocean In A Drop: Music for Film, on 4th October.
This autumn is the final time to catch the performance in Europe. The shows in London, Manchester and Paris have aleady sold out, so be quick if you want to catch the Berlin concert on Tuesday 22nd October 2019.
