World video premiere: Waking Dreams: Reaction

by | Music, Music Video, New Music, Video

Waking Dreams are a duo made up of singer Angela Chambers and instrumentalist Jason Letkiewicz. While you may not know their names (yet) you have no doubt already enjoyed Angela’s voice: since landing in Berlin in 2014 she’s collaborated with the likes of Berlin’s legendary TM Schneider, Efterklang and Owen Roberts.

A US native, Angela was based in NYC from where she toured with her then-italo-disco band Dust, which is how she first encountered Berlin. After realising that she needed a break from the city that never sleeps, Angela moved to Berlin in 2014. After writing music together long-distance, Jason followed Angela to Berlin in 2015 and the resulting explosion of creativitiy became the groundwork for their debut album – out in May this year – ‘Askew‘.

Reaction from Waking Dreams is out today on indieRepublik

Fast forward to 2020 and kapow! Coronavirus. While locked down, Angela and Jason released their first video/single off the new album, a song entitled ‘Etched’, which we at indieRepublik were enough enamoured of that we included it in our The Best New Bands Radio Show on Alex Berlin 91.0 (also available as podcast).

“The 2nd single from Waking Dreams’ debut album ‘Askew’ is a vision of change, with Jason’s nostalgic guitar lines weaving between Angela’s moody and spherical vocals”

So we’re very proud to be able to host the world premiere of their brand new single / video, ‘Reaction’, a bold statement of the times we live in. The repetition of life forcing us to slow down. The unknown reminds us to see, to open the eyes, ears and hearts to a new reality. The 2nd single from Waking Dreams’ debut album ‘Askew’ is a vision of change, with Jason’s nostalgic guitar lines weaving between Angela’s moody and spherical vocals. This track clearly gives us a reason to go on.

“Angela’s powerful, velvet-wrapped vocals are propelled along by tribalistic drums and layers of floating melodic guitar lines.”

At times, the music feels ethereal, almost mystical, shrouded in an early morning haze. It has electronic elements at its core, while still coming from a richer and deeper songwriting tradition. In terms of references, Fleetwood Mac, Opal, Chromatics, Beach House and Bat for Lashes come to mind and create good hooks to hang from.

Now the duo are ready to take their kismetic relationship to the next level: their debut album Askew via NYC-based label Touch Your Life Records in May. Waking Dreams are living proof that when the music is meant to be, things will find a way to work out.
