Award-winning metalheads Killswitch Engage have recently released their eight studio album, Atonement. One of the most influential figures in the metalcore scene, they’re coming to play five shows in Germany, including one in Berlin on October 26th.
Killswitch Engage rose out of the ashes of Aftershock and Overcast in 1999, a time when metalcore was still in its infancy. The mid-1980s to 90s had seen a couple metallic hardcore bands emerge, but the genre didn’t gain popularity until the turn of the century. Alive or Just Breathing, the second album by Killswitch Engage – released in 2002 – is deemed to be the record to push metalcore into the spotlight. It climbed the charts of several metal/rock stations, ultimately making its way into the Billboard Charts.
2004’s The End of Heartache went on to prove the band wasn’t a one-album-wonder: the new heavy hitter peaked on the Billboard 200 and Australian Album Charts, following a tour with ‘big four’ member Anthrax. It also won album of the year, awarded by British music magazine MetalHammer. A special edition and live DVD followed, eventually reaching certified Gold by the RIAA in late 2007. As Daylight Dies and their second self-titled earned them similar success, with tracks being featured in various media, among them Guitar Hero III and Resident Evil: Apocalypse.

Following the departure of vocalist Howard Jones, Disarm The Descent cast a new wind into the band’s music. Staying true to their melodic roots, replacement vocalist Jesse Leach experimented with various vocal styles, mixing in new layers and making the whole record sound faster than ever before; also assisted by drummer Justin Foley, who implemented more blast bleats, the typically heavy drum beat found in hardcore and metal.
Incarnate was the result of many sleepless nights. In interviews, Leach opened up about his struggles to write the best, most in-depth lyrics of his musical career so far. They were supposed to express the restlessness of our contemporary society, whilst staying vague enough for everyone to find a piece of themselves in them. Atonement followed in that tradition: during the writing process, Leach had to undergo vocal treatment. The album is aiming to convey the perseverance the band went through, reaching to be their most diverse yet.
The new record combining the catchy hooks, melodic breakdowns, and rough riffs Killswitch Engage has become known for can be witnessed live on their five tour dates in Germany. indieBerlin is giving away a raffle ticket for their concert at Huxley’s Neue Welt – write to win(at)indieberlin.de for a chance to win!
