Indie stalwarts Metronomy a sure bet to have Columbiahalle dancing to their tune

Metronomy have since the 00s been an ever-present and somewhat underrated force in the indie music scene. Emerging alongside artists such as the Klaxons and Two Door Cinema Club, they have released six albums that display far more diversity and innovation than many of their contemporaries. Their talent for infectious choruses and hooks shouldnโ€™t overshadow a serious commitment to the music they make. Their live shows, with co-ordinated light displays and dancing elevate the songs, have won them praise and a wider following across the globe. This combination is sure to set Columbiahalle alight next Thursday.

Formed by Joseph Mount as a teenager, originally the band was essentially a solo project. However, as Mount released early singles under the Metronomy moniker, they began to attract wider attention. In particular, their currency increased via remixes of other, more established artists including Gorillaz and Franz Ferdinand. This showcased Mountโ€™s musical ear and talent for production. 2011โ€™s โ€˜The English Rivieraโ€™ marked a high-point for the band and spawned hit single โ€˜The Lookโ€™. With the album nominated for the Mercury Prize, the band received considerably more coverage and were picked for the 2012 NME Awards Tour.

Whilst the intervening years have not peaked these heights, nevertheless the bandโ€™s output has been steady and received generally favourable reviews whilst not quite matching the commercial success of their early years. A highlight was 2016โ€™s โ€˜Summer 08โ€™, which mined a lot of the same worthwhile vein as their earlier material. โ€˜Salted Caramel Ice Creamโ€™, from this year is also stands as one of the bandโ€™s outstanding songs. There is plenty across their back catalogue to assure that the live show will be a good one, and well worth the price of admission. A sure-fire feel-good and danceable indie party: whatโ€™s not to like?

Metronomy will play Columbiahalle on 24th October. Tickets are available here.
